3 Best Gross Motor Activities For Preschoolers That They Will Enjoy

I have been full with freelance writings and home matters lately that I haven’t updated my blogs in a while. I am still writing a lot on Facebook as per usual, though. There’s one fine day that a parent reached out to me after I posted about my three-year-old reading progress. She’s a mother of five, but she wanted to start homeschooling her five-year-old due to the pandemic, so she wanted to learn how I did it.

First thing first, it’s really an honor to have a mother of five following me and asking for advice. I vowed to help her as much as I can, but I told her that I will share what I know in my blog post, so the reach will be more. I am happy to guide as much parents out there as possible. But you must know, I don’t have a background in ECCE, so if you are going to dig more on ECCE, you will need to follow more of the ECCE educators and advocates. But I do have experience tutoring kids from as little as 4 years old to those who are sitting for STPM, in various subjects. What do all these kids have in common? The learnings should be fun, the teacher should be fun, and everything else will naturally takes place.

I am homeschooling my son as well, but I have to say that it didn’t come easily and as per planned at first. It takes some adjustments in my priorities, until I found something that suits him. And one of the priorities for him was on his gross motor skills. But before I proceed, I have to stress that for kids below 7 years, the most important thing is to make sure they have enough bonding, nutrition and play. The best play is unstructured play, and the best unstructured play is in nature. This is where kids can get all kinds of skills at once. But I also know that there are parents that have very little reading time and need some help fast. So, here goes some of the things that you can do with them to encourage their gross motor skills!

1. Running And Jumping

Kids LOVE running and jumping! I remember there was time when our son always had constipation, we had to plan a lot of physical activities for him. And then the Movement Control Order (MCO) happened, and we couldn’t go outside, so we run around our living room. He jumped on the sofa, on the bed, and everything in between. This makes his constipation issues better, and also made him happier and emotionally well. Sometimes, when they are allowed to jump freely, you will be surprised to find out that they can even do a somersault!

2. Kicking & Throwing Ball

Which kid doesn’t love a ball? We have a kid-sized football at home that our son loves to play everyday. The act of kicking and throwing help kids develop strength in their arms and legs. Not to mention all the running burns off their energy (and yours too)!

3. Bubble Play

This is my favourite, because we literally do nothing but blow the bubbles. It is very good for kids, in a number of ways. First, of course, because of all the running and jumping involved. Second, it is actually one of the best tools to teach kids about vocabularies and instructions. Bubbles are going everywhere at a slow pace, so you can take the time to tell them the shape of the bubble and how it feels when touched. You can show them how a bubble is blown from different types of materials. You can also go to the next level to even make your own bubble together. Aside from that, you can also train them instructions if you want, by telling them how you want them to pop the bubble (first instruction followed by the next one). But I prefer to just let my son play however he wants.

There, those are the top three gross motor activities that preschoolers will enjoy (my son sure did). Will share on other things once I find the next free time. Hopefully, soon enough!
